Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., ND, Founder and President
Dr. Joseph E. Pizzorno, Jr., ND, appointed by President Clinton in December 2000 to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, and by President Bush's administration to the Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee in February 2003, is one of the world's leading authorities on science-based natural medicine. A physician, educator, researcher and expert spokesperson, Dr. Pizzorno is founding president of Bastyr University. In 1996, he was appointed to the Seattle/King County Board of Health and the founding board of directors of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. In 2002, he became the founding editor of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal. He has been licensed as a naturopathic physician in Washington State since 1975. Dr. Pizzorno has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In May, 2003, the American Holistic Medical Association recognized him as a "Pioneer in Holistic Medicine." In May 2004, the Institute for Functional Medicine honored him with the Linus Pauling Award.

Dr. Pizzorno is the author of Total Wellness and co-author of the internationally acclaimed Textbook of Natural Medicine, Handbook of Natural Medicine, Natural Medicine Instructions for Patients, best-selling Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (1,000,000 copies in six languages), Natural Medicine For the Prevention and Treatment of Cancer and soon to be released Encyclopedia of Healing Foods.

Buck Levin, PhD, RD, Director of Health Science
Dr. Levin's science-based understanding of the nutritional and lifestyle causes of disease resulted in his being recognized in 2000 by the American Dietetics Association as one of the leading nutritionists in the country in 2000. He is author of Environmental Nutrition - Understanding the Link between Environment, Food Quality, and Disease (1999).

Kerry Evans, PhD, Director of Technology
Dr. Evans has a 20+ year track record of innovation and leadership in software development, expert system development and bioengineering including: object oriented design and development; multimedia web application design and development; user interface design; computer graphics; scientific, engineering and commercial software development; publishing (books and electronic products); project management and medical research.

Brady Davis, MBA, Director of Business Development
Brady Davis manages the strategic direction of SaluGenecists while creating new business and partnership opportunities. He has over twelve years of experience in sales, business development and management in the healthcare marketplace. Brady has successfully developed and managed sales and marketing teams for several companies including TeleMedic Systems Inc., Agilent Technologies, and Marconi Communications.

Brady has experience taking companies from the concept phase to profitability. He has also played instrumental roles in product development and establishing the organizations as leaders in their fields. Brady holds bachelor degrees in History, Philosophy and Biochemistry, and an EMBA from the University of Washington.

Matthew Brignall, ND, Senior Researcher
Matthew Brignall, ND, is a senior research scientist for the Salugenecists team. He graduated in 1999 from Bastyr University with a degree in Naturopathic Medicine. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Michigan. Dr. Brignall is an adjunct professor of clinical nutrition at Bastyr University, and is a member of the clinical faculty, as well. He specializes in complementary and alternative treatments for patients with cancer.

Lara Pizzorno, MA(Div), MA(Lit), LMT, Senior Medical Editor
Lara Pizzorno has an M.A. (Divinity) from Yale University, an M.A. (Literature) from the University of Washington, and also holds an LMT (Licensed massage therapist). A member of the American Medical Writers Association with 25+ years experience writing and editing articles, books and website content for physicians and the public, Lara is a highly polished medical writer and editor. Among other works, she is a contributing author to Total Wellness (1996), the Textbook of Natural Medicine (1999), co-author of Natural Medicine Instructions for Patients (2002), and The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods (Scribner's 2004).

William Benda MD, FACEP, FAAEM, Medical Director
Dr. Benda received his professional training at Duke University, University of Miami School of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. He has served as Director of Emergency Medical Services and Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA, as the sole physician in Eastern Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and subsequent cholera epidemic, and as medical director of the Big Sur Health Center. His research and clinical work has focused on patients with breast cancer, animal-assisted therapy, and physician health and well-being. Dr. Benda is a co-founder of the National Integrative Medicine Council, a non-profit organization for which he has served as Director of Medical and Public Affairs. He is an editor, contributor, and medical advisory board member for a number of conventional and alternative medicine journals, and lectures extensively on a variety of topics in the integrative arena.

 

KNOWLEDGE WORKERS

Ryan Bradley, ND
Ryan Bradley, ND is a residency-trained naturopathic physician currently practicing at the Bastyr University Center for Natural Health. Dr. Bradley has a specialty interest and expertise in integrative medicine in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. He is actively involved in the clinical research development for the Naturopathic Medicine Research Agenda, a five-year research plan unifying the research efforts of all accredited naturopathic institutions. Dr. Bradley has served as a pre-doctoral NIH research fellow while studying at Bastyr University. The advancement of naturopathic physicians as primary care providers throughout the country is another priority area of action for Dr. Bradley, an area he develops daily in his practice and via the expansion of relationships between naturopathic physicians and conventional colleagues. Dr. Bradley's undergraduate training in chemical engineering and experience in pharmacology research help create a strong foundation in general biomedical science.

Jennifer Cornforth, ND
A naturopathic physician and graduate of Bastyr University, Dr. Cornforth brings to the Salugenecists team a combination of clinical and critical thinking honed by research and information management in a variety of disciplines. Dr. Cornforth graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University in 1994 with a degree in psychology. At Wesleyan, she conducted research on covert visual misogyny in printed media. Post college, she worked in data compilation and analysis in the fields of medicine and law before attending Bastyr University from 1996-2000, where she served on the Bastyr Institutional Review Board for four semesters. After several years in private practice, Dr. Cornforth is currently focusing her energies on research and writing, with a focus on the neuroendocrinology of PMS and peri-menopause.

Petra Elena Eichelsdoerfer, RPh, MS (Nutrition), ND
Dr. Eichelsdoerfer graduated from Bastyr University and the University of Washington. She worked clinically for 10 years as a pharmacist in retail, poison center and public health settings before entering and completing Bastyr's MS Nutrition and Naturopathic Medicine programs. Currently teaching a wide variety of courses at Seattle Institute of Oriental Medicine (SIOM) and Bastyr, she also researches at Bastyr and writes content for SaluGenecists, Inc. Her primary areas of interest are probiotics and fermented foods, obesity, toxicology, and interactions associated with medications, foods, and dietary supplements.

Stephanie Gailing, MS
Stephanie Gailing is a nutritionist, writer and natural health education consultant who received her MS in Nutrition from Bastyr University. She has over 16 years work experience in varied facets of wellness education including operating her own natural products retail store and consulting company, and developing educational materials for dietary supplement manufacturers. Formerly Director of Nutrition Research and Client Services for The Hartman Group, where she authored Integrated Health Care: Consumer Use and Attitudes, a research study surveying the public's participation in complementary/alternative medicines, Stephanie has written widely for both businesses and consumers on nutrition and integrated healthcare. She has served as adjunct faculty at Bastyr where she tought Nutritional Supplements and Herbs, and Introduction to Nutrition in Natural Medicine classes to undergraduate and graduate nutrition students.

Alicia Gonzalez, ND
Dr. Gonzalez graduated from Bastyr University's naturopathic medicine program in 2002. Upon graduation, she completed an informal residency at Woodland Park Wellness, a clinic specializing in physical medicine and the treatment of chronic pain. She also completed a one year teaching fellowship at Bastyr University. During the fellowship, she learned skills to become an educator while furthering her knowledge in naturopathic medicine. Dr. Gonzalez participated in clinic shifts both at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health as well as the University's on-campus shift. She guest lectured in a variety of courses ranging from biochemistry and neurology to grand rounds and botanical medicine. She was co-instructor of the Childhood Vaccination elective as well as Psychological Assessment and full professor for the Practice Managament series and counseling labs. Upon completion of the fellowship, she became an adjunct faculty member. Outside of Bastyr University, she has her own private practice, Tashi Delek Health & Wellness, in Seattle. Beginning July, 2004, Dr. Gonzalez will begin seeing patients in a study through Bastyr University designed to evaluate the effect meditation has on patients in a hospice setting in the final stages of life.

Joseph Katzinger, ND
Dr. Katzinger is a naturopathic physician and graduate of Bastyr University. He received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Michigan State University where he researched the influence of environmental conditions upon gene expression and regulation. Dr. Katzinger brings to SaluGenecists his strong research skills and passion for integrative medicine. While versed in all facets of naturopathic medicine, he has a special interest in environmental medicine.

Jennifer Lush, ND
Dr. Lush graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in psychology with an emphasis on the biology of behavior and neuroscience. Additionally, she focused on public health and HIV/AIDS prevention in Latin America, working in medical clinics in rural Paraguayan villages for several months. Jennifer focused on behavioral research at UW and began her career at Bastyr University in 1995 in the newly created research department. She attended the naturopathic medicine program from 1996 to 2001, earning her doctorate in naturopathic medicine. While a graduate student at Bastyr, Jennifer continued to research alternative medical approaches to HIV/AIDS and breast cancer. She has contributed work to Breast Cancer, Beyond Prevention, published in 2002. Jennifer has operated a natural health clinic and private practice in Seattle since 2001, joining SaluGencists in 2003. She has also been a consulting naturopath at Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy and served on the board of the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians (WANP) from 2002 to 2004.

Erica Oberg, ND
Dr. Oberg is a residency-trained naturopathic physician and clinical researcher. She brings to the SaluGenecists team a research background as co-investigator on several research studies, including investigations of naturopathic treatment of hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Formerly, she co-founded a CAM-specialty research service. Currently she teaches and maintains private practice at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health.

Catherine L. Cather, Senior Vice President Business Development
Ms. Cather specializes in the emerging field of e-health. She is currently Senior Vice President Business Development for HealthAllies, a company offering a platform for consumer direct benefit programs. Prior to joining HealthAllies, Cathy was at Towers Perrin serving in a number of leadership roles, including leading the total health management practice and co-leading the healthcare strategy practice. Most recently, she focused her consulting on e-health projects, participating in the e-initiatives core teams for both Tillinghast (Health Plan and industry consulting) and Towers Perrin (Consultants to Fortune 500 employers).

Jeffery Bland, PhD, International Leader in Nutritional and Functional Medicine
Author, biochemist, physician educator, Functional Medicine pioneer, Dr. Bland is widely recognized as a powerful force for healthcare change. His 26-year career in nutritional biochemistry has spanned roles as a researcher, professor, thought leader, and internationally recognized expert in human nutrition. More than 50,000 health practitioners have attended Dr. Bland's international seminars and educational programs during the past 15 years.

David Jones, MD, Leader in Nutritional and Functional Medicine
Dr. Jones has been practicing as a family physician with emphasis in functional and integrative medicine for over 20 years. He served as Chief of Staff at the Ashland Community Hospital and as President of the Southern Oregon Society of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Jones is President of the Institute for Functional Medicine and PrimeCare, the largest physician-managed Independent Physician Association (IPA) of Southern Oregon.
